Overview

Job Summary

 

The Senior Director of Construction provides oversight and guidance across multiple new store builds and major construction initiatives. This position plays a key role in program coordination, long-term planning, and supporting field construction teams with tools, standards, and decision-making frameworks. This role collaborates closely with the VP of Construction to help execute growth plans, improve cross-functional alignment, and ensure quality, safety and cost-effectiveness of construction across the organization.

 

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the VP of Construction in managing department strategy, resource planning, and overall execution across construction projects.
  • Coordinate preconstruction phases of construction including design, permit, bid and construction.
  • Provide construction expertise and support to Real Estate for market analysis, due diligence and entitlements.
  • Serve as a senior program leader coordinating timelines, budgets, and construction priorities across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Provide guidance and support to Sr. Construction Managers, Construction Managers and facility improvement Project Managers, offering direction on large or complex projects when needed.
  • Evaluate and help improve construction processes, reporting practices, and vendor performance across the department.
  • Monitor program-wide performance indicators, identify emerging risks, and recommend mitigation strategies to executive leadership.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders including Real Estate, Facilities, Operations, and Finance to ensure alignment throughout the construction lifecycle.
  • Assist in capital planning, scenario modeling, and prioritization of construction investment.
  • Participate in bid evaluations, contract reviews, and policy refinement to maintain quality and cost discipline.
  • Help define and uphold construction standards, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance across all markets.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, building code, regulation and best practices to inform program improvements.
  • Manage relationships with third party contractors, service providers and vendors to ensure best cost, quality, safety and compliance.
  • Work with senior leaders of Construction, Real Estate, Operations and Merchandising to align store criteria with company goals and operational requirements.
  • Represent the Construction team in cross-departmental or leadership-level initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering, or related field; or a combination of equivalent education, training, and experience.

Experience:

  • 15+ years’ experience in construction management, with experience overseeing multiple large-scale commercial construction projects.
  • Deep understanding of construction methods, contracts, safety standards, and regulatory codes
  • Experience in retail, grocery, or distribution center construction
  • Knowledge of architectural design process, building code compliance and permitting.
  • Direct experience with vendor and contract management.
  • Experience with design, permitting, bidding, contracting and entitlements
  • Experience interfacing with senior leadership and managing construction strategy at a program or portfolio level.

 

Ability to:

  • Proactive self-starter with an owner/investor/developer attitude.
  • Ability to work through complex problems and competing priorities.
  • Ability to lead a collaborative process across the WinCo Foods organization with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to translate complex project information for executive decision-making
  • Proficiency in budgeting, forecasting, and data-driven reporting
  • Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time

 

 

Preferred Education, Experience and/or Credentials:

  • Construction Management or Project Management Certifications (CCM, PMP, LEED AP, etc.)
  • Experience with the integration, installation, and commissioning of warehouse automation technology
  • Experience with design, installation and maintenance of commercial refrigeration systems
