Job Summary

 

Oversee the direction and operation of the produce department in a defined geographic area or division.   Effectively supervise produce department managers in assigned location to ensure effective coordination and management of the produce department operations so as to control costs, meet targeted labor, maintain projected profit margins, and meet or exceed sales goals.  Select, hire, train and mentor produce department managers to meet the day-to-day business needs at their store location.

 

Strongly preferred this person reside in the Boise, ID (Treasure Valley) area.

This position will support all Western Idaho and Eastern Washington locations and the surrounding region; including current and future locations in the general geographic area. 

 

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership in produce department policy and procedure implementation in compliance with Federal, State and local regulatory requirements, through interaction with Vice President of department operations and peer produce department managers.  Establish goals, monitor progress and achievements. 
  • Provide leadership and supervision to produce department managers and personnel.  Apply continuous improvement processes to enhance work flow, improve job skills, and individual knowledge of produce operations to achieve company objectives. 
  • Build, develop and manage the division produce department management team in meeting current and future needs.
  • Supervise produce department managers by motivating, training and participating in the hiring of personnel.  Work with produce department managers to set goals, measure progress, and evaluate performance results for produce department and individual employees.
  • Provide guidance to produce department managers for monitoring employee performance, motivating and mentoring, recommending personnel action (i.e., hiring, firing, layoff and disciplinary action, scheduling personnel according to coverage needs and service level), maintaining a safe and secure work environment, etc.
  • Provide direction to produce department managers to maintain and encourage an atmosphere of fast, friendly, courteous customer service.Utilize customer information for improvements in products and services.
  • Apply sound communication and motivational techniques in leading, coaching and developing produce department managers and employees through consistency and follow-through of performance and employee related issues.  Document substandard performance and take corrective action including formal discipline and termination when necessary.
  • Ensure compliance of safety standards are maintained and adhered to consistently. Ensure department is neat and well organized; apply company safety policies such as “clean as you go”.  Address potential safety hazards quickly. Possess an understanding of operations and equipment; coordinate emergency evacuations; communicate with outside emergency response teams.
  • Mentor produce department managers to meet departmental projected sales and gross margin objectives by creating effective promotional and seasonal displays, overseeing cost/quality control and preventing shrink and controlling expenses.
  • Direct and mentor produce department managers to ensure adequate product quantity, quality and freshness; overseeing ordering, merchandising effectiveness, culling and rotation practices, following regulatory labeling laws. Direct and mentor department managers to ensure cleanliness and WinCo sanitary guidelines.
  • Perform all job duties and responsibilities with honesty and integrity.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or needed.

Requirements

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience:

  • Minimum one (1) years management or leadership experience
  • Demonstrating adaptability and flexibility when confronted with challenging situations or obstacles; comfortable with change and ambiguity; practicing constructive criticism and dealing well with difficult co-workers and supervisors
  • Demonstrating leadership of diverse teams as well as effectively influencing others
  • Demonstrating effective oral and written communication skills necessary to communicate with all levels of internal and external team members and customers.
  • Demonstrating working knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Providing leadership through skills in communication, interpersonal, management of people, customer relations, and employee relations, analysis, planning orders, judgment, reaction to business activity, etc.
  • Understanding the responsibilities within the produce dept. through past experience as a Produce Clerk, Assistant Manager or equivalent.
  • Communicate (hearing & speech) with in-store personnel and outside individuals.
  • Conduct visual inspections, read reports, computer screens, etc.

Ability to:

  • Write and speak clearly and succinctly in a variety of communication settings
  • Perform supervisory skills (e.g., interviewing, scheduling, hiring, counseling, training, disciplining, etc.).
  • Be dependable, self-directed, and demonstrate initiative.
  • Continuously learn and improve skills; resilient, receptive and responsive to performance feedback
  • Ability to form strong partnerships across the organization
  • Perform duties with mental alertness involving potential hazards with respect to related procedures, equipment (e.g., knives, band saws), and work aides.
  • Learn product variability, perishability, safety and sanitation procedures and department policies.
  • Understand state & federal regulations if certification is needed.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the time.
  • Availability to respond to calls on urgent matters involving food safety including after business hours, on weekends and holidays. 
  • Perform primary duties efficiently and accurately.

Additional Requirements:

  • Food Handlers Certification (Per State Laws)
  • Acceptable Department of Motor Vehicles driving record.

Machines and Equipment Operated:

  • Computer terminal.

Preferred Education, Experience and/or Credentials:

  • College degree or substantial experience (minimum two (2) years) as a supervisor, manager or similar formal leadership role preferred.
