Overview

Safely and efficiently move trailers from the yard or the Truck Return Center (TRC) into the correct dock door or staging location in the yard, in a manner and condition that meets all company policies, FMCSA and DOT requirements.  Promotes and contributes to a positive work environment through cooperative and professional interactions with co-workers, customers, vendors and the public.  Consistently provide friendly and engaging customer service to internal and external customers.  Perform related work.

 

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver friendly and engaging customer service to internal and external customers by telephone, radio, and in person. Model friendly, enthusiastic customer service with an emphasis of taking care of the customer(s) both internal and external.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Hostler responsibilities in the event of an evacuation of the DC.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the Hostler Training Guide and be willing and able to train other Hostler(s), as needed, for the operation.
  • Effectively manage the yard, to include, but not limited to: “deadrow” for trailers needing service, designated area for carriers on the drop trailer program and the E-Slab to pre-cool Perishable trailers.
  • Demonstrated ability to comply with the DC Food Safety Plan and Food Defense Plan by ensuring all trailer doors, both swing and roll-up, are closed at all times when not in use and staged in yard.
  • Weekly inventory of all spill kits and report shortages to DC Maintenance Manager for reordering.
  • Observe and report to DC Supervision if common carriers that don’t follow WinCo yard policies such as appropriate speed limits, driving through the staging areas, disconnecting from trailer etc.
  • Monitor reefer settings for loads staged in yard or at the dock and trailers that are used for recall items.
  • Monitor fuel levels in belly tanks on Perishable trailers to be at ¾ full or higher before putting to the dock for an outbound load.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate safely and follow safety procedures to not pull a trailer on a red light.
  • Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the tractor (Goat), in accordance with FMCSR and company standards including tires, headlights, taillights, fuel level, oil and coolant level, etc. Washes and fuels tractor and trailer in preparation for the next use. Completes a Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR), documenting issues and/or reporting items requiring immediate attention.
  • Ensures loads are secure and travel ready including verification of freight and reefer temperature. Weighs outbound load on scale prior to travel, ensuring weight is within limit specifications for equipment as dictated by DOT and company policy, as needed. Reports issues to DC Supervision immediately.
  • Ability to submit a trailer list to Dispatch and DC Supervision and update through the shift, as required.
  • Monitor the fuel island to make sure that common carriers aren’t transitioning through or attempting to exit via fuel island lanes.
  • Ability to work with Dispatch to identify trailers that will be used for backhauls (BH’s) and utilize the WinCo Foods wash rack for cleaning the inside of trailers.
  • Assist on-site third party vendor, if requested, in identifying trailers or tractors that need to be cleaned.
  • Ensures that all safety procedures and policies are followed; complies with OSHA standards.
  • Maintains a clean, neat and orderly work area ensuring the Goat is cleaned out daily.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or needed.

 

Requirements Experience:

  • Demonstrating the ability to follow direction, rules and policy as provided by management.
  • Demonstrating initiative and self-direction, ability to work independently and/or in a team environment, be dependable, reliable and possess excellent time management skills.  

 

 

Ability to:

  • Consistently provide friendly and engaging customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Obtain and maintain all necessary licensing and certification to safely and efficiently operate a tractor/trailer combination.
  • Work various shifts and days of the week in a 24/7 operation; including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Obtain necessary licensing and certification to safely and efficiently operate powered industrial forklifts, powered pallet jacks, etc., if required.
  • Occasionally move pallets up to 3,500 lbs. with a manual pallet jack.
  • Stand, walk and sit throughout a shift.
  • Bend, stoop, twist and turn occasionally.
  • Reach, lift, stack and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to 50-100 lbs. occasionally, within the range of floor level to overhead.
  • Communicate utilizing comprehensive verbal, written and inter-personal communication skills.
  • Exhibit manual dexterity, hand/eye coordination, and depth perception.
  • Establish and maintain good rapport with co-workers, supervisors and others.
  • Prioritize and perform a variety of simultaneous tasks (multi-tasking).
  • Perform primary duties safely with efficiency and accuracy.
  • Use and communicate with on board computing equipment e.g. radio and TaskQ.
  • Develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with fellow employees and outside contacts, user groups and vendors.

 

Additional Requirements:

  • Acceptable Department of Motor Vehicles driving record for the past three (3) years.
  • Current resident of the local State.

 

Machines and Equipment Operated:

  • 80,000 lb. or more GVWR tractor / trailers.
  • Forklifts, Powered Pallet Jacks, Manual Pallet Jacks
  • On-board computer system
  • Truck/Trailer wash

 

Preferred Education, Experience and/or Credentials:

  • Knowledge of the retail grocery industry and corresponding products.
